If you've been sent a Criteria test link for an Apptio role, you're in the same boat as a lot of strong applicants who simply hadn't seen a timed aptitude test since school.
Apptio hires across engineering, product, finance/FinOps, and go-to-market roles, and the CCAT is used as a fast, standardized early filter. The test doesn't care about your résumé — it measures how quickly and accurately you reason under a hard time limit.

No official Apptio cutoff is published. Use the ~24/50 general CCAT average as your floor, not your goal. Technical and analytical FinOps roles reward a higher score; the realistic objective is to land consistently in the upper half on timed mocks and to keep your accuracy up as you speed up.

How to prepare for the Apptio CCAT
Don't underestimate a 'tech company aptitude test'
Engineers sometimes assume the CCAT is trivial and skip prep — then lose points to the clock, not the difficulty. The constraint is time, and time pressure is trainable.
Sharpen the verbal section too
Strong quantitative candidates often leave easy verbal points on the table. Analogies and antonyms are the fastest points on the test — warm them up so you bank them in seconds.
Know your per-topic weak spot before test day
Generic practice tells you a total score. What helps is knowing whether you're losing time on number series vs. spatial rotation — so you can triage correctly on the real test.
Timing strategy that works on any CCAT
Budget ~18 seconds per question, and mean it
50 questions in 15 minutes is roughly 18 seconds each. The test is designed so almost no one finishes — your job is not to answer all 50, it is to answer as many as you can correctly. Glance at a question; if you don't see a path within a few seconds, mark a best guess and move on.
Never leave a question blank
There is no penalty for wrong answers, so a blank is strictly worse than a guess. In the last 30 seconds, fill every remaining bubble. A random guess on a 4-option item is still a ~25% chance of a free point.
Triage by type, not by order
Verbal analogies and antonyms are usually fast; multi-step word problems and number series are slow. If a question is going to cost you 45 seconds, that's nearly three questions of time. Skip the time-sinks early and bank the easy points first.
Practice mental math without a calculator
No calculator is allowed. Drill percentages, fraction-to-decimal conversions, and ratio shortcuts until they're automatic. The questions aren't hard arithmetic — they're hard arithmetic under a stopwatch.
